Speaking of which, I saw them in concert at The MOD Club in Toronto on February 4th. This, my dears, was a concert of sheer genius. Playing with He Is We and The Cab, the Summer Set lit up Toronto, made them dance, smile, and sing along, all while maintaining excellent stage composure, and formidable acoustics, sounding almost exactly like they do on the record. The Cab followed suit as well, and He Is We opened an excellent set overall, with truly amazing, underground bands bursting with talent and sheer kindness. Each member of every band took the time after the show to personally meet every fan in the large auditorium style concert, expressing gratitude and fan appreciation that is refreshing in this music industry. Once again with a lost voice, I greeted John Gomez from the summer set between The Summer Set's performance and The Cab's set, and he was gracious enough to take many pictures with my friend and I, and then greet the swarm we caused around him with unwavering kindness. The show was amazing overall, with a good sound, and a good new video to match.
I can't blog about music without talking about one of my favourite bands, The Summer Set, on a regular basis. Today, they released a music video for their latest single, "When We Were Young." And, the video is not at all what I expected from the song. It is kind of related, but kind of unexpected, a creative twist much appreciated from the young band. Once again, I found it nearly impossible to write a six page rant about how much I love The Summer Set. But, here's a short album review!
With the release of their Christmas EP, “What Money Can’t Buy,” The Summer Set took the same, yet different, approach to their record. It only features three songs, entitled “Old Mexico”, “Love By Our Side”, and “Something Bout This Time of Year”. Typical to the Summer Set sound, every song features an intricate combination of pop, rock and even a bit of country twang. Lead singer Brian Dales’ unique voice brings a new life to each song, adding an unexpected twist to the holiday music. The record can only be purchased online, with a suggested donation of about $5 to benefit the Toys for Tots Foundation, which helps give toys to underprivileged children for Christmas. Any donation is welcome though, and all proceeds go to the charity. With this heartwarming album, the Summer Set really does bring back the true meaning of Christmas. |
